Clean Sticky Messes with Ease!

Summer is here! Time for fun in the sun, exciting outdoor activities and sweet indulgences. Nothing is better than our favourite sweet treats while relaxing on days off or during summer vacation. Whether it be our favourite frozen treats, delectable candies or sweet drinks, our moments of indulgence can result in some not-so-sweet messes. The Cleaning Ladies specialize in cleaning any kinds of stains or messes. We want to share our experience so anyone can clean sticky messes like a professional cleaner. The 5 most common sticky messes include:

  • Ice Cream
  • Popsicles
  • Lemonade/Juice
  • Chocolate
  • Candy

We want to cover each of these different treats and how to properly clean them so you can get back to enjoying your time. Different sticky residues require different methods of cleaning. You have to consider the source of the mess and understand what products or methods will most effectively clean your mess. We hope this information can save you and your time dealing with any sticky situation.

How to Clean Ice Cream

Ice cream is a staple summer treat that nearly everyone enjoys. The sweet concoction of frozen dairy can present several challenges when approaching this sticky spill. Ice cream contains a variety of fruits, colourings and additives, resulting in many variations of sticky residues. Ice cream also contains proteins unproperly treated will only deepen the sticky spot.

Ice cream is easiest to clean up immediately after the accident happens. You never use hot water when cleaning ice cream messes. Using cold water only prevents the proteins in the ice cream from setting in the clothing, carpet or fabrics. Dried ice cream can be stubborn messes. First, dampen the sticky spot with cold water and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Lightly dab the mess with a damp cloth to remove any loose residue. If any tough stains remain, apply a small amount of laundry detergent and allow the stain to soak for half an hour. Apply stain remover to any bad stains leftover on clothing before your next washing cycle.

How to Clean Popsicle Messes

Popsicles are very popular with children and those of us who are still kids at heart. We all love these frozen treats, but know what we are signing up for when we eat them. Sometimes we wear as much as we eat. The messes from dropping pieces of the popsicles or dripping sugary sweat can cause clothing or carpet stains.

Popsicle messes are relatively easy to clean. They don’t have the same difficulties as ice cream. Apply a mixed cleaning solution made with cold water and a mild detergent. Allow the water solution to sit for 30-40 mins then dry with a cleaning rag. If the stain persists, a stronger cleaning product may be required. A commercial spot & stain cleaner or bleach solution will take out any unwanted mess. Just be careful to not damage the area underneath the stain while cleaning.

How to Clean Lemonade/Juice Spills

Everyone has their favourite memory of sweet summer sugary drinks. It could be a fresh-squeezed lemonade from a fair, the neighbourhood corner lemonade stand or those staple juice boxes we know and love. Don’t let an unwanted stain ruin these fond memories. Liquid spills are easier to clean the sooner you can attend to them.

If you are quick enough, wiping the stain with a paper towel before the drink can set could solve your issue right then and there. Drink stains that went unnoticed are still one of the easier sticky spots compared to the others. Dampen a cleaning rag with warm water and wipe the area until the discoloration dissipates. Some stains from sticky spills may require additional cleaning products.

How to Clean Chocolate Messes

Chocolate messes are even more common during the summertime heat. The ooey-gooey treat can cause stains on more than our fingers. The cocoa and sugars within chocolate can cause very problematic stains. The use of either a laundry detergent or white vinegar solution will be required to remove most chocolate stains. Wash the area with cold water and remove excess chocolate pieces. Apply your chosen cleaning solution then allow time for it to work its magic. Rinse the area to remove any leftover chocolate and remove the cleaning product. Allow the area to air dry and wallah, the stain will disappear.

Our extensive “How to Remove a Chocolate Stain” blog covers a more detailed version of the process.

 How to Clean Candy Messes

Last but not least, we want to address candy. Candy comes in all shapes and sizes. However, all candy messes are treated similarly. They are easier to remove than chocolate, but still, need to be treated properly. Vinegar is the best solution for cleaning candy stains. A bit of vinegar mixed with water applied to a candy stain will loosen the stain and allow you to wipe it out with a damp cloth. For more stubborn candy residue, you can apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area to break away the candy.
